Nominate the Next Hall of Famer

Help preserve South Dakota’s basketball legacy by submitting a nomination for the South Dakota High School Basketball Hall of Fame. If you know a deserving former player, coach, or contributor who made a lasting impact on high school basketball in the state, we encourage you to nominate them for the next Hall of Fame selection round. Eligible candidates must be out of high school for at least 15 years. Your nomination helps ensure the stories of South Dakota’s greatest basketball figures are honored and remembered.

Hall of Fame Selection Criteria

South Dakota High School Basketball Hall of Fame nominees will be selected for induction based on meeting the following criteria:

Pre-1955

For nominees who attended high school prior to 1955 (before all‐state teams):

1. Played on a state tournament team
a. Won a state championship and undefeated team
b. Named to all-tournament team
c. Played in a region tournament
2. Played in a national tournament
3. Starter on a SDHSBHOF Team of Excellence
4. Season and career statistics that set school or conference records or made top 10 state high school records
a. Totals or averages for points, rebounds, assists, steals, field goals, free throws
b. Percentages for field goals, free throws
c. Single-game highs

* In addition, a nominee’s candidacy may be further supported by the following:
1. Evidence of a successful college and/or professional basketball career
2. Selection to statewide all-star games
SDBCA/SDHSAA – Aberdeen
3-Class Shootout – Salem
NE – SD All Star Games – Yankton
Black Hills All Star Game – Spearfish
Sanford SD All Star Games – Sioux Falls
3. Evidence of a successful occupational career
4. Evidence of recognition for contributions to community, state, or nation

1955-1985

For nominees who attended high school from 1955 to 1985 as part of the two-class system and all-state teams (girls started in 1975):

1. All-State First Team
2. Team accomplishments
a. Played on the South Dakota Prep Team of the Year
b. Played in the state tournament
c. Won a state championship
d. Named to the All-State Tournament Team
e. Played on a SDHSBHOF Team of Excellence
3. Season and career statistics that set school or conference records or made top 10 state high school records
a. Totals or averages for points, rebounds, assists, steals, field goals, free throws
b. Percentages for field goals, free throws
c. Single game highs

1986-Present

1. All-State First Team
2. Team accomplishments
a. Played on the South Dakota Prep Team of the Year
b. Played in the state tournament
c. Won a state championship
d. Named to All-State Tournament Team
e. Played on a SDHSBHOF Team of Excellence
3. Any selection as All-American, Player of the Year, Ms. or Mr. Basketball, Combined Class All-State Team
4. Season and career statistics that set school or conference records or made top 10 state high school records
a. Totals or averages for points, rebounds, assists, steals, field goals, free throws
b. Percentages for field goals, free throws
c. Single game highs

For Team of Excellence nominees

1. South Dakota Prep Team of the Year
2. Team record
Undefeated season
Consecutive wins
Overall record/winning percentage
3. Won a state championship
4. Participated in a national tournament and their finish
