Craig Cheeseman (Hanson 1987): Craig Cheeseman was the steady hand and driving force behind one of the most iconic runs in Hanson High School basketball history. As a 6-foot-2 guard, he led the Beavers to their first-ever Class A state championship in 1986, the inaugural year of the three-class system. Cheeseman’s athletic excellence continued at Dakota Wesleyan University, where he was a rare four-sport athlete, earning 15 varsity letters in basketball, football, baseball, and track.
Bill Christensen (Canton 1971): Bill Christensen was a dynamic scorer and steady leader for the Canton C-Hawks in the late 1960s and early 1970s. A 6-foot-1 guard, Christensen led Canton in scoring for three consecutive seasons and built a reputation as one of the premier backcourt players in South Dakota. Sam Goodhope (Winner 1986): A 6-foot-3 floor general ahead of his time, Sam Goodhope blended size, skill, and basketball IQ to become one of the most dynamic guards in South Dakota high school basketball history. As the leader of the Winner Warriors, Goodhope averaged 22.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, 6.8 assists, and 2.5 steals per game during his senior season, a performance that earned him the title of 1986 South Dakota Mr. Basketball. Goodhope took his talents to the University of South Dakota, where he averaged 12.4 points, 4.5 assists, and 3.2 rebounds per game.
Colby Fitzgerald (Dell Rapids St. Mary 2004): A cornerstone of Dell Rapids St. Mary’s golden era, Colby Fitzgerald was the driving force behind the Cardinals’ historic rise in the early 2000s.
