Alexandria High School 1965
John Thomas played for the Alexandria Beavers during the undefeated season in 1965. John was the South Dakota High School Athlete of the year in 1964. The rugged 6’ 5” Alex cager was on the Boys “B” All State Team in 1965. The determined Alex team won three close games to win the State “B”. John scored 25 points in the final game and was a mainstay on the boards. He was a solid defensive player. Brother Mel Thomas was a key cog in the Alexandria team which was number 1 much of the year. John was a rugged player that could shoot from outside. After graduation he starred for the SDSU Jackrabbits in Brookings. The Thomas brothers made sure the first year Coach Gerald Sayler would have a successful year. John Thomas and his brothers have been such an important part in our South Dakota Basketball History. Great job John Thomas of the 27-0 Alexandria Beavers. John Thomas will be inducted into the South Dakota High School Hall Basketball of Fame on 27 March 2010. |
